In short

Open Settings, tap Battery and turn on Battery Percentage. On an iPhone with Face ID the number then shows inside the battery symbol in the status bar. It was off on our iPhone 17e.

5 of 5 steps show a real screenshot from our iPhone 17e. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.

Steps

0 of 5 steps
  1. 1

    Tap Battery in Settings

Open the Settings app. Battery is in the group with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Mobile Service, below Personal Hotspot.

iPhone screen: Tap Battery in Settings
  2. 2

    Find Battery Percentage

The Battery page opens with the usage chart. Battery Percentage is the last switch, below Battery Health, Charging and Power Mode. On ours it was off.

  3. 3

    Turn on Battery Percentage

Tap the switch so it turns green.

  4. 4

    Check the status bar

The number now shows inside the battery symbol at the top right: 39 on ours.

    Turn it off again

To hide the number, tap the same switch so it turns grey. The status bar shows the plain battery symbol again.

If you do not see this option

  • No percentage in the status bar? Apple says on iPhone models with Face ID you can also swipe down from the top-right corner to see it in Control Centre. Source: Show the iPhone battery percentage
  • Want the battery of AirPods too? Apple says a Batteries widget on the Home Screen shows the iPhone and connected accessories. Source: Show the iPhone battery percentage

If this does not work

  • The battery symbol turned yellow? That is Low Power Mode. On ours, Power Mode on the Battery page read Adaptive. See how to turn on Low Power Mode on an iPhone.
  • The percentage drops fast? Check the battery usage chart on the same page and Battery Health: how to check battery health on an iPhone.
  • Still no number on an older iPhone? Apple's note about the number inside the battery symbol covers iPhone models with Face ID and iPhone Duo. On other models the status bar can look different, so check the top of the screen after turning the switch on.
  • The percentage seems stuck at 80? That is usually charging, not the display. Apple says the Battery page shows estimated times to reach 80% and 100% while the iPhone charges. Check there to see whether charging is still going on.
  • Battery Health is not where Apple says? Apple names it differently by model. On iPhone 14 or earlier, tap Battery Health & Charging. On iPhone 15 or later, the 17e included, tap Battery Health.

Good to know

On Android: on a Google Pixel and on a Samsung Galaxy.

The percentage stays in the status bar until you turn the switch off, and it changes nothing else on the phone. If the screen feels crowded, leave it off and swipe down from the top-right corner to check the number in Control Center only when you need it. For more on that panel, see customise Control Centre on an iPhone.

The Battery page has more than the switch. Apple says it shows when the iPhone was last fully charged and unplugged, plus a Daily Usage summary that turns orange when you have used more battery than usual and lists the top three apps or system activities behind it. Tap View All Battery Usage to look back over the past week.
