How to turn off iOS beta updates on an iPhone
By Saadat Rafiq · 2 min read · 5 steps · Updated 5 October 2026
Open Settings, General, Software Update, tap Beta Updates and choose Off. The iPhone then stops offering betas. If a beta is already installed, it stays until the next public iOS release, or you erase the phone and restore it.

Step by step

Open Settings and tap General
General starts the group below Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Battery.

Tap Software Update
It is the second row under About.

Look at Beta Updates
The row shows the current choice. On our phone it said iOS 27 Developer Beta, and Software Update offered iOS 27.2 Beta 2 (8.52 GB). Do not tap Update Now or Update Tonight if you want to stay on the public version.

Tap Beta Updates and choose Off
The list has Off and the beta programs the phone can use: on ours, iOS 27 Developer Beta. Tap Off so the tick moves there, then go back. The Apple Account shown below the list is blurred in our picture.

Check the result
Back on Software Update, Beta Updates should read Off. Our picture shows the same page earlier that day, with Beta Updates off and iOS 27.0.1 up to date.
If you do not see this option
- Your iPhone may run a different version. The screenshots here show iOS 27.0.1 (iPhone 14 Pro). On another version a setting can have a different name or sit in a different place. See your version under Settings, General, About. Update under Settings, General, Software Update; back up first, plug in and use Wi-Fi. - Search for it. Open Settings, tap the search field, type the name of the setting and tap the result. Apple notes that the sections in Settings depend on the iPhone model. Source: Find settings on iPhone
- It is greyed out. Screen Time restrictions can lock settings; Apple gives this as the reason when the Apple Account row is greyed out. Check Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions. Source: If you can't sign out due to restrictions, or your Apple Account is grayed out in Settings
About this guide
When Beta Updates is set to a beta program, Software Update offers test versions of iOS, such as iOS 27.2 Beta 2 on our phone. Betas are test versions and can have bugs. Switching the setting off is the safe default for a phone you rely on.
The screenshots are our own, taken on an iPhone 14 Pro running iOS 27.0.1. The phone had not installed the beta, and Beta Updates was then switched back to Off.
Good to know
Turning off Beta Updates does not uninstall a beta that is already on the phone. Apple's options: wait for the next public release of iOS and install it, or erase the iPhone, restore it to the public version and then restore a backup made before you installed the beta.
A backup made while the phone ran a beta may not restore onto the older public version.
Automatic Updates is a separate setting. How updating works: how to update an iPhone.
In short: Settings, General, Software Update, Beta Updates, Off.
