In short

Open Settings, tap Bluetooth and switch it on. Nearby devices show under Available devices; tap one to pair. Switch it off on the same page, or tap the Bluetooth tile in Quick Settings.

5 of 5 steps show a real screenshot from our Nord 5. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.

If this does not work

  • Pairing fails? Turn Bluetooth off and on, and restart the other device.
  • Wrong name on your car or speaker? Change Device name before pairing. More: change the device name on a OnePlus.
  • Connected but no sound? Google suggests checking that the volume is up on both the phone and the accessory, and that another paired device is not playing the audio instead. In the device's own settings, make sure Media audio is on for music and Phone audio for calls.
  • Asked for a code you do not have? Google says to try 0000 or 1234, which many headsets and older car kits use by default. Otherwise the code is in the accessory's manual.
  • Car will not see the phone? Old pairings can get in the way. Google suggests clearing phones you no longer use from the car, following the car's manual, and removing old devices from your phone too, then pairing again.
  • Bluetooth went off by itself? Turning on aeroplane mode can switch Bluetooth off as well. Check whether aeroplane mode was switched on, for example by a stray tap in Quick Settings, then switch Bluetooth back on.

Good to know

Turn aeroplane mode on or off on a OnePlus.

With Bluetooth on, the phone keeps a link with your paired devices and reconnects when they are in range, so earbuds and car kits work without you opening Settings. Leaving it on when you use nothing uses a little battery; Google's battery advice is to turn Bluetooth off when you are not using it. Switching it off disconnects every device straight away, but the pairings are kept, so they reconnect the next time you switch Bluetooth on.

Some accessories support Google's Fast Pair: if a notification offers to pair, tap it to connect without opening Settings. If you share files rather than audio, that is a different feature: see who can send you files with Quick Share.
