How to download offline maps in Google Maps on Android
2 min read · 5 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
Open Google Maps and search for the place. Open its details, tap More, tap Download offline map and tap Download. The area then works without internet, including driving directions.
An offline map saves a city or region on the phone. It is useful abroad without a data plan, in the mountains and in underground car parks. Download it on Wi-Fi before you leave.
Step by step
Open Google Maps on Wi-Fi
Maps for a whole region can be large, so do not use mobile data for the download.
Search for the place
For example a city name.
Open the details and tap More
Swipe the row of buttons under the place name to the side until you see More.
Tap Download offline map, then Download
Before you confirm, you can move and resize the frame to choose the area.
Use it offline
Use Google Maps as usual. Navigation works without a connection as long as the whole route lies inside the downloaded area.
Good to know
To see or delete your maps, tap your profile picture in Google Maps and then Offline maps.
Offline, you get driving directions only. Public transport, cycling and walking directions are not available, and neither are traffic information and alternative routes.
Offline maps expire. Google Maps updates them automatically on Wi-Fi when they are within 15 days of expiring. You can also update them by hand in the Offline maps list.
With an SD card in the phone: profile picture, Offline maps, Settings, Storage preferences, SD card. Maps already downloaded have to be downloaded again afterwards.
In short: Google Maps, search the place, More, Download offline map, Download.
