About this guide

Maps picks the fastest route, which often means a toll road or motorway. You can rule them out for every drive or just look at the options for the route on screen.

The screenshots are from Google Maps 26.31.02 on a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with Android 16 and One UI 8.5, in dark mode. Maps looks the same on other Android phones; only the phone's own Settings screens differ by brand.

Good to know

Avoid highways can make a long trip much slower; Maps still shows the time for the new route before you start.

In short: Maps, Settings, Navigation, Route options: Avoid tolls, highways or ferries. Or Directions, options icon, Trip options.
