In short

Open Settings, General management, Samsung Keyboard settings and tap Voice input. Choose Samsung voice input, Google Voice Typing or None. Samsung voice input was selected on our Galaxy A57.

4 of 4 steps show a real screenshot from our Galaxy A57. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.

    Check the other options

Below are Offline language pack, Use Side button for voice input when keyboard is open (Off on ours) and Hide offensive words (On).

If you do not see this option

  • No Voice input row? Samsung says Samsung voice input only works with the Samsung Keyboard. Check that it is your keyboard, then search Settings for "Voice input". Source: Adjust keyboard settings on your Galaxy phone or tablet
  • No microphone on the keyboard? Voice input may be set to None. Pick Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing (step 3).

If this does not work

  • Voice typing without internet? Download your language under Offline language pack.
  • Words blanked out? Hide offensive words was On on ours. Switch it off if real words get hidden.
  • Google Voice Typing not in the list? Samsung's guide turns it on first under Settings, General management, Keyboard list and default, with the switch next to Google Voice Typing. Then go back to Voice input and choose it.
  • Microphone tap does nothing the first time? Samsung says first-time use of Samsung voice input may ask you to agree to terms or allow permissions. If you dismissed that prompt, tap the microphone again and accept it, or allow the microphone for the voice service in its app permissions.
  • Words come out in the wrong language? Voice input has its own language, separate from the keyboard layout. Samsung says you choose it among the offline voice languages on the Voice input screen; on our phone these were under Offline language pack.
  • Microphone icon is greyed out? Another app may be using the microphone, such as a call or a voice recorder. Close it and try again. Check that the microphone works in a voice recording too.

Good to know

Use the clipboard on a Samsung keyboard. Turn off keyboard sound and vibration.

Changing the service only changes what happens when you tap the microphone on Samsung Keyboard. Your keyboard layout, saved words and other settings stay as they were. To undo, come back to Voice input and pick the previous service.

An offline language pack lets you dictate in that language with no internet connection, which helps on a plane or with weak signal. For other keyboard behaviour, see turn off autocorrect on a Samsung Galaxy.
