Step by step
Restart the phone
It clears a stuck keyboard process and fixes most short-lived lag.

Open Samsung Keyboard settings
Settings, General management, Samsung Keyboard settings.

Switch off the extra suggestions
Suggest emojis and Suggest stickers were on on ours. Switch them off and try typing again. If the lag goes, leave them off.

Test without Predictive text
Switch off Predictive text for a moment. If typing becomes smooth, the prediction data may be the problem.
Clear the keyboard's cache
Settings, Apps, Samsung Keyboard, Storage, Clear cache. Your words and settings stay.
Update the keyboard
Samsung Keyboard updates come through the Galaxy Store, which needs a Samsung account, or with a software update under Settings, Software update.

Reset to default settings
At the bottom of the Samsung Keyboard page. Use it last, because it undoes your keyboard changes.
About this guide
A slow keyboard is usually caused by the suggestion features working in the background, an outdated keyboard app or a full phone. The settings below are all on one page.
The screenshots are from a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with One UI 8.5 and Android 16. Other Galaxy phones on One UI 8 use the same menus; on older One UI versions a few names and positions differ. We only looked at these screens on our phone and changed nothing.
Good to know
If only one app lags, update that app; the keyboard is rarely the cause then.
Lag across the whole phone points to low storage: how to check and free up storage on a Samsung Galaxy phone.
In short: Restart; Samsung Keyboard settings: suggestions off, test Predictive text; clear cache; update; reset to default last.
