Samsung Galaxy says No SIM card: fixes

By · 2 min read · 6 steps · Published 6 October 2026

Short answer

Switch Airplane mode on and off, then restart the phone. If it still says No SIM card, open Settings, Connections, SIM manager and check that the SIM is switched on. Then power off, take the SIM out, check it and put it back. A SIM that fails in every phone needs replacing by your carrier.

Step by step

  1. Android screenshot: Check the status bar

    Check the status bar

Pull down the quick panel. With a working SIM, the signal bars and the carrier name show at the top. We blurred our carrier.

  2. Android screenshot: Switch Airplane mode on and off

Switch Airplane mode on and off

Tap the plane button in the quick panel, wait a few seconds and tap it again. The phone searches for the SIM and network again.

  3. Android screenshot: Restart the phone

    Restart the phone

Tap the power icon at the top of the quick panel, then Restart.

  4. Android screenshot: Check SIM manager

    Check SIM manager

Open Settings, Connections, SIM manager. Each SIM has its own switch; if it is off, the phone ignores that SIM. Ours shows SIM 1 on and an empty second slot that says No SIM card. We blurred the number.

  5. 1Power off2Eject the tray3Check and reseat the SIM

Take the SIM out and check it

Turn the phone off, open the tray with the ejector pin, wipe the SIM and tray with a dry cloth and put the SIM back with the gold contacts facing up. A tray that is not fully closed also causes the message.

  6. Who is at fault?Fails in every phone: the SIMOther SIMs fail here: the phone

Try the SIM in another phone

If the SIM fails in another phone too, ask your carrier for a new SIM or an eSIM. If another SIM works in your phone, the old SIM is the problem.

About this guide

No SIM card means the phone cannot read the SIM at all, which is different from No service (SIM read, but no network). The fix is usually in the tray or the SIM manager, not in the network settings. We only looked at these screens on our phone and changed nothing.

The screenshots are from a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with One UI 8.5 and Android 16, in Dark mode. Other Galaxy phones on One UI 8 use the same menus; on older One UI versions a few names and positions differ.

Good to know

If the phone still restarts into No SIM card, Samsung suggests Settings, General management, Reset, Reset mobile network settings; it also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings.

If the phone reads the SIM but has no signal, see Samsung Galaxy says No service. Moving to an eSIM avoids a worn tray: how to add an eSIM on a Samsung Galaxy.

In short: Airplane mode on and off, restart, SIM switched on in SIM manager, reseat the SIM, try it in another phone.
