Short answer

Open Settings, Battery, Background usage limits. Take the app out of Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps, add it to Never auto sleeping apps, or switch off Put unused apps to sleep. Then turn off Power saving and check the app's own notification settings.

Step by step

  1. Android screenshot: Check Deep sleeping apps

    Check Deep sleeping apps

Settings, Battery, Background usage limits. The number next to Deep sleeping apps shows how many apps never run in the background. Ours had 6, all added by the phone itself.

  2. Android screenshot: Take the app out of the list

Take the app out of the list

Open Deep sleeping apps (and Sleeping apps), find the late app, touch and hold it and tap Remove.

  3. Android screenshot: Add it to Never auto sleeping apps

Add it to Never auto sleeping apps

Apps in this list are never put to sleep. Add every app whose messages must arrive on time.

  4. Android screenshot: Or stop putting apps to sleep

Or stop putting apps to sleep

Put unused apps to sleep sends apps you have not opened for a while to sleep. Switching it off helps every app, at some cost to battery life. It was on on our phone.

  5. 1Swipe down2Power saving3Tap to turn off

    Turn off Power saving

Power saving limits background activity, so notifications can wait until you open the app. Swipe down from the top right and tap Power saving off.

  6. Android screenshot: Check the app's notification settings

    Check the app's notification settings

Settings, Notifications, App notifications, then the app. Allow notifications must be on, and the Lock screen and Notification pop-up boxes must be ticked if you want to see them there.

About this guide

When messages only arrive once you open the app, the phone has usually put the app to sleep to save battery. Sleeping apps cannot check for new messages in the background.

The screenshots are from a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with One UI 8.5 and Android 16. Other Galaxy phones on One UI 8 use the same menus; on older One UI versions a few names and positions differ. The app lists are blurred. We only looked at these screens on our phone and changed nothing.
