In short

Go to Settings, Apps, Safari and tap New Profile under Profiles. Type a name, pick an icon and colour, then tap the tick. To delete one, tap it, tap Delete Profile, then Delete. On ours, deleting our only extra profile also removed the Personal profile iOS had made.

6 of 6 steps show a real screenshot from our iPhone 17e. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.

Steps

0 of 6 steps
  1. 1

    Tap New Profile

Open Settings, tap Apps, then Safari. Scroll down to Profiles and tap New Profile. The note below says a default Personal profile will be made automatically when you start using profiles.

  2. 2

Name it and tap the tick

Type a name. Pick an icon and a colour below it. Under Settings, Favourites became a folder with the same name on ours. Tap the tick at the top right.

    Check the list

Profiles now listed Personal and Test. We had not made Personal: iOS added it.

To delete one, tap Delete Profile

Tap the profile in the list. Delete Profile is at the bottom of its page.

    Tap Delete

The box says this deletes the profile, including all its favourites, history and tabs.

  6. 6

    Check the list

Ours was back to just New Profile: Personal went too, and Safari had no profiles again.

If this does not work

  • A Personal profile appeared? That is normal: iOS makes it when you add your first profile, as the note under Profiles says.
  • Lost tabs after deleting? Deleting a profile deletes its tabs, history and favourites, as the Delete box says. Apple says this cannot be undone.
  • A profile turned up on your iPad or Mac? That is by design. Apple says profiles you create on the iPhone also appear in Safari settings on any iPhone, iPad or Mac signed in to the same Apple Account, and that profiles sync automatically when Safari is turned on in iCloud. Bear this in mind before you delete one on a shared account.
  • An extension is missing in one profile? Extensions are chosen per profile. Apple's steps: Settings, Apps, Safari, Extensions, tap the extension, then turn on each profile you want under Allow Extension In.
  • Work sites are not suggested as you type? Edit the profile and check Favourites. Apple explains that this picks the bookmarks folder whose sites are recommended when you type an address, search or open a new tab.

Good to know

To clear history in one go, see how to clear Safari history and website data on an iPhone.

Each profile has separate favourites, history, tabs and Tab Groups, Apple says, so pages you visit in one do not show up in the history of another. Deleting one profile leaves the data in your other profiles alone.

To clear the history of one profile or of all of them, see how to clear Safari history and website data on iPhone.
