In short

Go to Settings, About device and tap Device name. Type a new name (up to 32 characters) and tap Save. Others see it over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct.

3 of 3 steps show a real screenshot from our Nord 5. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.

Steps

0 of 3 steps
  1. 1

    Tap Device name

Open Settings, About device. Device name is the tile on the left.

  2. 2

    Type the new name

The box says the name is shown when you use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct. The counter showed 14/32.

  3. 3

    Tap Save

Save stays grey until you change the name. We tapped Cancel.

If you do not see this option

  • Hotspot name? Personal hotspot has its own name. We have no SIM to show it.
  • Older OxygenOS? The OxygenOS 14 manual shows the same About device page with the device name at the top. Source: OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual
  • Want to rename the hotspot instead? The OnePlus manual puts it in a different place: go to Settings, Connection & sharing, Personal hotspot, then tap Hotspot settings to change the hotspot name and password. Source: OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual
  • Quick Share has its own name? Searching Settings for device name on ours found two rows: Device name under About device, and Device name under Google, Quick Share.

If this does not work

  • Old name still shows on a car or PC? Remove and pair the phone again.
  • Save greyed out? Change at least one character.
  • Name too long to fit? The box allows up to 32 characters and the counter shows how many you have used. Shorten the name until it fits, then tap Save.
  • New name not showing in the Bluetooth list? Turn Bluetooth off and on again on the other device and let it search afresh. Some devices keep a list of names they saw earlier and only refresh it on a new scan.
  • Name looks cut off on another device? Cars, watches and older computers often have small screens or short name limits. Put the part that identifies the phone at the start, for example your first name, so it still makes sense when shortened.

Good to know

Find the model and IMEI on a OnePlus.

The new name is used the next time another device finds your phone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct. Devices that are already paired keep working, but some keep showing the name they saved when you first paired. Nothing else changes: your Google Account, phone number, files and settings are untouched, and there is no effect on battery or data. To undo it, open About device again and type the old name; on our Nord 5 the original was OnePlus Nord 5.

If you need the details that identify the phone itself, rather than the name you chose, see how to find the IMEI, model and build number.
