Step by step

  1. Android screenshot: Check Microphone access

    Check Microphone access

Settings, Security and privacy, Privacy, Controls and alerts. When Microphone access is off, no app can use the microphone. It was on on our phone.

  2. Android screenshot: Check the app's permission

    Check the app's permission

Settings, Security and privacy, More privacy settings, Permission manager, Microphone lists which apps may record. Apps under Not allowed cannot use it: tap the app and allow it.

  3. Android screenshot: Switch Bluetooth off for a test

Switch Bluetooth off for a test

Earbuds in a drawer or a car nearby can take over calls and the microphone. Swipe down from the top and tap Bluetooth off, then try again.

  4. Microphone openingsBottom edge, next to the USB-C portTop edge or near the camera

Remove the case and clean the openings

A case or a screen protector can cover a microphone hole. Wipe the openings and the USB-C port with a soft, dry brush or cloth; do not push pins into them.

  5. 1Side key + volume down2Restart

    Restart the phone

Another app can keep hold of the microphone. A restart frees it.

  6. Android screenshot: Test it in Diagnostics

    Test it in Diagnostics

Settings, Device care, Diagnostics. On our phone this page held one card, Phone diagnostics, which runs its checks in the Samsung Members app and needs a Samsung account. If a microphone check there fails as well, the phone needs a repair.

About this guide

If nobody can hear you on calls, or an app records silence, first find out whether it is one app or all of them. A single app points to a permission; every app points to a switch, a headset or the hardware.

The screenshots are from a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with One UI 8.5 and Android 16. Other Galaxy phones on One UI 8 use the same menus; on older One UI versions a few names and positions differ. The app list is blurred. We only looked at these screens on our phone and changed nothing.

Good to know

A green dot at the top of the screen means an app is using the camera or microphone right now: green dot on a Samsung Galaxy: what it means.

In short: Microphone access on, the app allowed under Permission manager, Bluetooth off for a test, clean openings, restart, Diagnostics.
