In short

Swipe down twice, tap the pencil and add System boost or Virus scan from Tap a tile to add. System boost opens Phone Manager's memory page with Boost now. Virus scan starts a scan at once and shows the result.

7 of 7 steps show a real screenshot from our Nord 5. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.

Steps

  1. 1

    Find System boost

    Check the update notes

Settings, System & update, Software update, update notes. Under Phone Manager they list category cleanup for large, old, duplicate and document files, and the System boost and Virus scan icons.

If you do not see this option

  • Not in the list? They came with the EX01C10P02 patch; the update notes (last step) list them under Phone Manager. Check Software update.
  • From Phone Manager instead? Viruses & risks also lists System boost and Storage cleanup under Recommended optimisations, each with Go.

If this does not work

  • Remove a tile? Open the edit view again; we removed both tiles there. More: Quick Settings tiles.
  • Apps closed after Boost now? Boost closes background apps. Keep apps open with background app settings.
  • Want Google's scan too? Scan with Play Protect.
  • Phone slow again soon after Boost now? Closed apps reopen when you use them or when they need to deliver messages, so memory fills up again. Google says Android manages memory and battery automatically, so frequent boosts do little; restart the phone if it stays slow.
  • Virus scan finds a risky app? Follow the options it gives you, and if you do not recognise the app, uninstall it. You can also check it with Play Protect, which Google says can deactivate or remove harmful apps and notify you.

Good to know

Find large and duplicate files on a OnePlus.

Adding or removing the tiles changes only Quick Settings; Phone Manager and its features stay available either way. A boost has no lasting effect: closed apps simply start fresh next time, which can take a moment longer and lose your place in them. The virus scan only reads what is installed and does not change anything unless you act on a result. Google Play Protect, which is on by default, also scans the phone periodically, so the two work side by side. If storage rather than memory is the problem, see free up storage on a OnePlus.
