In short

In Photos, open the photo and tap Share. Tap Privacy and compatibility under "Share 1 photo", tick Remove location (and Remove other properties if you like) and tap Done. To stop new photos getting a location, switch off Add location tags in Camera settings.

4 of 4 steps show a real screenshot from our Nord 5. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.

Steps

0 of 4 steps
  1. 1

    Tap Privacy and compatibility

Open the photo in Photos and tap Share. Under "Share 1 photo", tap Privacy and compatibility.

  2. 2

    Tick Remove location

Under Privacy protection, tick Remove location. Remove other properties strips the device model, aperture, shutter speed and more. On ours Remove location was greyed out with "No location": the photo had none.

  3. 3

    Tap Done

Then pick the app to share with. The box notes you can change the defaults in Photos settings.

    Stop tagging new photos

In Camera, open the menu and Settings. Under General, Add location tags was Off on ours.

If you do not see this option

  • Remove location greyed out? The photo has no location. Ours said "No location".
  • On an older OxygenOS version? OnePlus's OxygenOS 14 manual puts the same Remove location and Remove other properties switches in Photos, Settings, Privacy protection, where they apply to every share. The share-sheet box on ours points to the same Photos settings. Source: OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual

If this does not work

  • No Privacy and compatibility link? Share from the Photos app; other apps use their own share sheet.
  • Location still on new photos? Check Add location tags in Camera settings (step 4). The phone-wide switch is in OnePlus location settings too.
  • Sharing from Google Photos instead? Google Photos works differently. Google says photos you download or email keep the location your camera saved, and it cannot change camera-added locations. For shared albums there is a Share photo locations option under Share, Options.
  • Want it removed on every share? The OnePlus manual describes turning on Remove location and Remove other properties in Photos, Settings, Privacy protection. The share box itself says the defaults can be changed in Photos settings.
  • Sharing several photos at once? The manual says you can touch and hold to select several photos or videos and share them together. Look for the Privacy and compatibility link before you pick the app.

Good to know

On a Galaxy: remove location from a photo on a Samsung Galaxy.

With Remove location ticked, the shared copy carries no location; with Remove other properties ticked, it also drops details such as the device model, aperture and shutter speed. The receiving app may still compress or resize the photo, which is separate. Nothing changes in your gallery, and the choice does not affect battery or data.

Switching off Add location tags in the Camera stops new photos getting a location at all, which suits people who rarely want it. Leave it on if you like seeing photos on a map; then use Remove location only when you share. For the phone-wide picture, see OnePlus location settings.
