Quick answer

Open WhatsApp Settings, Privacy, Last seen and online. Choose Nobody (or My contacts) under Who can see my last seen, then Same as last seen under Who can see when I'm online. Hiding yours also hides everyone else's from you.

Step by step

Open Settings, then Privacy
Tap the three dots at the top right, then Settings. Privacy is below Account: Blocked accounts, disappearing messages.

Tap Last seen and online
It is the first row under Who can see my personal info. Ours said My contacts, Everyone.

Choose who can see it
Last seen: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except... or Nobody. Online: Everyone or Same as last seen. Pick Same as last seen to hide online too.

If you do not see this option

Can't hide online on its own? The page says: If you don't share when you were last seen or online, you won't be able to see when other people were last seen or online. Source: About last seen and online
Who sees it with Everyone? WhatsApp says only people you have called or messaged before, or saved as a contact, see your last seen and online with Everyone. Source: How to change your privacy settings

If this does not work

Can't see someone else's last seen? WhatsApp lists the reasons: you hid yours, you have not chatted or saved them, they hid theirs, or you may be blocked. Source: About last seen and online

Last seen and online are set on one page. Online has only two choices: Everyone or Same as last seen.
