In short

Open Settings and tap Home screen. Under the Home screen layout heading, tap Home screen layout (4×6 on ours). Pick 4x6, 4x7 or 5x8 in the preview and tap Apply. With 5x8 our icons got smaller and a fifth column was left empty. We set 4x6 back.

7 of 7 steps show a real screenshot from our Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.

Steps

0 of 7 steps
  1. 1

    Open Home screen settings

Open Settings and tap Home screen. It is in the group with Lock screen, Notifications & status bar and Display & brightness.

Scroll down to the Home screen layout heading. Its last row, Home screen layout, said 4×6 on ours. Tap it.

  3. 3

    See the choices

A full-screen preview of your home screen opens, with Cancel and Apply at the top and three buttons at the bottom: 4x6, 4x7 and 5x8. The current one, 4x6, had an outline round it.

    Pick one and tap Apply

Tap a layout to preview it. With 5x8 the icons got smaller and kept their places, leaving the right-hand column empty. Tap Apply at the top right.

    Check the home screen

Our apps, from Gallery, App Mall, Mi Browser and Music down to Game Centre, Security, Settings and Cleaner, stayed in their rows with smaller icons. The fifth column was empty and the dock still had four icons.

If you do not see this option

  • No 5x9? Xiaomi's HyperOS 3 guide lists 4x6, 4x7 or 5x9. Our Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G offered 4x6, 4x7 and 5x8. Source: Generic User Guide for HyperOS 3.0
  • No Home screen layout row? On ours it is the last row under the Home screen layout heading in Settings, Home screen, below Fill cells of uninstalled apps (on), Lock Home screen layout (off) and Don't show text (Off).
  • Want icons without names? That is Don't show text, on the same page; it said Off on ours. Xiaomi says to tap Off next to it and choose Anywhere or On widgets. Source: Generic User Guide for HyperOS 3.0

If this does not work

  • Icons too small after 5x8? Go back to 4x6. Xiaomi gives icon size its own slider: Settings, Personalization, Icons, Icon size. Our Settings spells it Personalisation.
  • Apps didn't fill the new column? On ours they kept their places after 5x8, so the right-hand column stayed empty. Nothing moved on its own.
  • Want fewer apps on the home screens? A layout only changes the grid. To keep apps in a list you swipe up for: turn on the app drawer.

Good to know

Bigger text instead of more icons: text size and font on a Xiaomi phone. The picture behind the icons: change the wallpaper.

Add a clock or other widget: add a widget on a Xiaomi phone. On a Pixel: change the home screen grid.
