How to turn on Caps Lock on an iPhone
2 min read · 3 steps · Updated 4 October 2026
Double-tap the Shift key on the iPhone keyboard. Caps Lock is then on and every letter is a capital until you tap Shift again. If the double tap does nothing, open Settings, General, Keyboard and switch on Enable Caps Lock.

The iPhone keyboard has no Caps Lock key of its own. One tap on Shift gives a single capital letter. For a whole word in capitals, Apple's user guide names the gesture: double-tap Shift. A switch in Settings decides whether that gesture works.
The screenshots show iOS 26.5 on an iPhone 17. On older versions the rows have the same names, with a slightly different look.
Step by step

Open Settings and tap General
General is the first row of the first group in the main Settings list.

Tap Keyboard
It is in the second group of the General page, below Fonts.

Scroll down to Enable Caps Lock
It is in the list of switches under All Keyboards. In the picture it is on, which is the state on a new iPhone. Switch it on if it is off.
Good to know
Then, in any text field, double-tap the Shift key to turn on Caps Lock.
For a single capital letter, tap Shift once, or touch Shift and slide to the letter.
In short: Double-tap Shift. If that does nothing: Settings, General, Keyboard, Enable Caps Lock on.
