How to take a screenshot on an iPhone
2 min read · 4 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
On an iPhone with Face ID, press the side button and the volume up button at the same time and let go. On an iPhone with a Home button, press the side or top button and the Home button together. The picture is saved in Photos.
A screenshot saves exactly what is on your screen as a picture. It takes one press, and you can crop it or draw on it before sharing.
The steps below cover every iPhone model.
The pictures are diagrams of the buttons to press.
Step by step
iPhone with Face ID: side button + volume up
Press the side button on the right and the volume up button on the left at the same moment, then let go quickly. Holding them down opens the power-off screen instead.
iPhone with a Home button
Press the side button and the Home button together and let go. On the first iPhone SE and older models, the button is on the top edge.
Edit the screenshot
On iOS 26 the screenshot opens full screen with the editing tools ready: crop, highlight or add text, then tap the tick to save. On earlier versions, or if you switch off Full-Screen Previews under Settings, General, Screen Capture, a small preview appears in the bottom left corner instead. Tap it to edit, or swipe it away.
Find the screenshot
Open Photos. It is in your library, and also under Collections or Albums in the Screenshots group.
Good to know
To capture a whole web page, take a screenshot in Safari and choose Full Page at the top of the editing screen. It is saved as a PDF in Files.
Without buttons: open Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Back Tap and set Double Tap to Screenshot. Two taps on the back of the phone then take one.
