Short answer

Press and hold an app on the home screen and drag it on top of another app, then lift your finger. Ours made a folder named Tools by itself. To rename it, open it and press and hold the name: tapping it did nothing on ours. A folder with one app stays until you empty it.

Step by step

  1. Android screenshot: Drag an app onto another

    Drag an app onto another

Press and hold an app and start dragging. The page shrinks a little, with a minus target at the top. Hold the app over the one you want to group it with; we dragged Music onto Mi Browser.

  2. Android screenshot: Lift your finger

    Lift your finger

The two apps become one folder icon. Ours was labelled Folder at first, then got the name Tools by itself.

  3. Android screenshot: Open the folder

    Open the folder

Tap the folder. It opens with the name Tools above Mi Browser and Music. Tapping the name did nothing on ours.

  4. Android screenshot: Press and hold the name

    Press and hold the name

Press and hold the name instead. Edit mode opens: the name, Tools, is in a box, with Done at the top and Wallpaper, Effects, Widgets and Settings at the bottom.

  5. Android screenshot: Type or pick a name

    Type or pick a name

Tap the box. The keyboard opens with suggestions above it: ours offered Tools, Toolstation and Tool's. Tap one or type your own; we typed nothing.

  6. Android screenshot: Tap Done

    Tap Done

Xiaomi's guide says to tap Done at the top right to confirm the new name.

  7. Android screenshot: Take an app out

    Take an app out

To undo it, open the folder, press and hold an app and drag it out onto the page. We dragged Music back to its empty spot.

  8. Android screenshot: A one-app folder stays

    A one-app folder stays

With only Mi Browser left, our Tools folder stayed on the home screen. HyperOS did not turn it back into an app icon by itself.

  9. Android screenshot: Empty it to remove it

    Empty it to remove it

Drag the last app out too. The folder disappears; we put Mi Browser back in its old spot, and the page was as before.

If you do not see this option

  • No Done button? Done shows in edit mode only. On ours, tapping the folder name did nothing; pressing and holding the name opened edit mode with Done at the top right. Source: Generic User Guide for HyperOS 3.0
  • No app drawer to drag apps from? Ours is in Classic mode, with every app on the home screens, so you drag them from there. Xiaomi says With App drawer shows apps in a drawer when you swipe up, in Settings, Home screen. Source: Generic User Guide for HyperOS 3.0
  • Want a bigger folder? Xiaomi says to touch and hold the folder until the pop-up window shows, tap Edit folder, and choose Regular, Enlarged or XXL. We did not try it. Source: Generic User Guide for HyperOS 3.0

If this does not work

  • Can't rename the folder? Xiaomi says to tap the folder name. On ours that did nothing: press and hold the name to get the name box and Done. Source: Generic User Guide for HyperOS 3.0
  • Folder won't go away? Ours stayed with one app in it. Drag the last app out too and the folder disappears.
  • Folder just says Folder? Ours showed Folder for a moment after we made it, then the name Tools. Open it and press and hold the name to change it.

About this guide

Xiaomi's HyperOS 3 guide says the system shows an app folder when you drag one app to cover another, and that you tap the folder name to rename it. On our Redmi, tapping the name did nothing; pressing and holding it opened a name box with suggestions.

The screenshots are from our Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G with Xiaomi HyperOS 3.0.308.0 and Android 16, in Light mode. Ours is in Classic mode, with every app on the home screens and no app drawer. We put Music and Mi Browser in a folder, then took them out again.

Good to know

Move an app or take it off the home screen: move or remove an app on a Xiaomi phone. Stop apps being moved by mistake: lock the home screen layout.

Keep apps out of sight instead: hide apps on a Xiaomi phone. Keep apps in a drawer you swipe up for: turn on the app drawer. On a Pixel: make an app folder on a Pixel.

In short: Press and hold an app, drag it onto another, lift your finger. Rename: open it, press and hold the name, Done.
