How to factory reset a Xiaomi phone (HyperOS 3)
Back up first. Then go to Settings, Additional settings, Factory reset. The page lists what is erased (contacts, photos and videos, apps, accounts, backups, SD card data and other items) and has an Erase all data button at the bottom.
3 of 3 steps show a real screenshot from our Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.
Steps
- 1
Open Factory reset
Back up first: how to back up a Xiaomi phone. Then go to Settings, Additional settings. Factory reset is at the bottom, under Need other settings?

- 2
Read what is erased
Under Erase the following items: Contacts, Photos and videos, Apps, Accounts, Backups, SD card data and Other items on this device. The page says to back up everything important to your computer or Xiaomi Cloud first.

- 3
Tap Erase all data
Tap Erase all data at the bottom and follow the steps on the screen. The phone restarts as new.

If you do not see this option
- Not in About phone? Xiaomi's guide says Settings, About phone, Factory reset. On our HyperOS 3.0.308 phone it was in Additional settings instead. Source: Generic User Guide for HyperOS 3.0
- Forgot an App lock password? Xiaomi says that without a Xiaomi Account added to App lock, a factory reset is the only way to clear a forgotten App lock password. Source: Generic User Guide for HyperOS 3.0
If this does not work
- Phone asks for a Google account after the reset? Google says you need the Google account that was on the phone to set it up again.
- Only want to fix network problems? Reset only the network settings: Xiaomi Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting.
- Reset seems to take forever? Leave it alone and keep it on charge. Google says a factory reset can take up to an hour, and to charge the phone to at least 70% before you start.
- Changed your Google password recently? Wait. Google says that if you recently reset your Google Account password, you should wait 24 hours before you factory reset the phone.
Good to know
Turn the phone off or restart it instead: how to turn off or restart a Xiaomi phone.
When the reset finishes, the phone starts with the setup screens, as on the first day. You need a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection to sign in to your Google Account, and Google says you must enter your security info to restore your data. This shows that you, or someone you trust, did the reset. Your account data can come back, but apps need reinstalling and you will set up fingerprints, face unlock, Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings again. Before selling or giving away the phone, also make sure nothing important is still only on it: see how to back up a Xiaomi phone.
