How to change the language of one app on Android

2 min read · 5 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Open Settings, tap System, then Languages, then App languages. Tap the app and choose the language. The rest of the phone keeps its language. This needs Android 14 or later, and the app has to support it.

You may want your banking app in English and your messages in Urdu or German. Android can set a language for a single app without changing the language of the whole phone.

Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the screen, not screenshots.

Step by step

  1. SystemLanguagesKeyboardGesturesDate & time

    Open Settings and tap System

    Then tap Languages.

  2. LanguagesSystem languagesApp languagesRegional preferences

    Tap App languages

A list of apps that support this feature appears.

  3. Tap the app

If the app is not in the list, its maker has not added support for per-app languages.

  4. Choose the language

Suggested languages are at the top, all others below. The app restarts in the new language.

  5. Go back to the phone's language

Open the same list, tap the app and choose System default.

Good to know

If the app does not change, close it and open it again, and make sure the phone is online. Apps often have to download the language first.

It can also help to add the language as a second system language under System languages, wait a few minutes and try again.

To type in another language, you do not need this setting. See how to add a keyboard language on Android.

In short: Settings, System, Languages, App languages, tap the app, choose the language.
