How to change an app's location permission on a Samsung Galaxy
By Saadat Rafiq · 2 min read · 4 steps · Published 6 October 2026
Open Settings, Location, App permissions. Apps are grouped by what they are allowed: all the time, only while in use, or not allowed. Tap an app and choose a new level, for example Allow only while using the app.

Step by step
Open App permissions
Open Settings, Location and tap App permissions.

See which apps can use location
The list is grouped into Allowed all the time and Allowed only while in use, with apps that are not allowed further down. We blurred one of our apps.
Change an app
Tap an app and choose Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Don't allow.

Location switched off?
At the top, ours says Device location is off. While it is off, no app gets your location; tap CHANGE to switch it on.
About this guide
Few apps need your location all the time. Checking this list now and then is one of the easiest privacy wins on a phone. We only looked at these screens on our phone and changed nothing.
The screenshots are from a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with One UI 8.5 and Android 16, in Dark mode. Other Galaxy phones on One UI 8 use the same menus; on older One UI versions a few names and positions differ.
Good to know
Wrong location in maps or weather is a different problem: Samsung Galaxy location not accurate.
In short: Settings, Location, App permissions, the app, choose the level.
