How to change your Apple Account password on an iPhone

2 min read · 6 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Open Settings, tap your name, tap Sign-In & Security and tap Change Password. Enter the passcode of the iPhone, then type the new password twice. You can keep your other devices signed in or sign them out.

The Apple Account (formerly Apple ID) password protects your photos, backups, purchases and Find My. On an iPhone that is already signed in, you can change it with the passcode of the phone, without knowing the old password.

Menu names are from recent versions of iOS.

Step by step

  1. Open Settings and tap your name

Your name is at the top of the list.

  2. Tap Sign-In & Security

This page also lists your email addresses, phone numbers and two-factor authentication.

  3. Tap Change Password

Enter the passcode of the iPhone when asked.

  4. Enter the new password twice

It needs at least eight characters with upper and lower case letters and a number. Do not reuse a password from another service.

  5. Decide about your other devices

Choose Remove Other Devices if you think someone else knows the old password, or Keep All Devices Signed In if you are only changing it as a routine.

  6. Sign in again where asked

Other devices and services, such as a Windows PC with iCloud or an Apple TV, ask for the new password the next time they connect.

Good to know

With Stolen Device Protection switched on, the iPhone may make you wait one hour before the change when you are away from familiar places such as home or work.

On a Mac: Apple menu, System Settings, your name, Sign-In & Security, Change Password. On the web: account.apple.com.

If you have forgotten the password and have no signed-in device, start the reset at iforgot.apple.com. Apple may ask you to wait for account recovery.

Parents can change a child's password from their own device under Settings, Family.

A good password and a second factor: how to make strong passwords you can actually remember and how to turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple Account on an iPhone.

In short: Settings, your name, Sign-In & Security, Change Password, passcode, new password twice, choose what happens to other devices.
