How to turn 5G on or off on a Samsung Galaxy (network mode)

By · 2 min read · 3 steps · Published 6 October 2026

Short answer

Open Settings, Connections, Mobile networks, Network mode. Choose 5G preferred to use 5G where available, or 4G preferred to turn 5G off. The phone falls back to 4G or 3G by itself where there is no 5G.

Step by step

  1. 1Settings2Connections3Mobile networks

    Open Mobile networks

Open Settings, Connections and tap Mobile networks.

  2. Android screenshot: Tap Network mode

    Tap Network mode

Network mode opens a list. Ours offers 5G preferred, 4G preferred and 3G preferred, with 5G preferred ticked. We pressed Cancel.

  3. Android screenshot: Choose the mode

    Choose the mode

5G preferred uses 5G when it can. 4G preferred turns 5G off. 3G preferred is only useful in rare cases, because calls and data are slow.

About this guide

You need a 5G phone, a plan that includes 5G and 5G coverage. Turning 5G off can save battery where the signal is weak. We only looked at these screens on our phone and changed nothing.

The screenshots are from a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with One UI 8.5 and Android 16, in Dark mode. Other Galaxy phones on One UI 8 use the same menus; on older One UI versions a few names and positions differ.

Good to know

A 5G icon in the status bar shows you are on 5G. If you never see it, check that your plan includes 5G.

Allow 2G service, on the same page, lets the phone use old 2G networks; turning it off is a little safer, emergency calls still work.

In short: Settings, Connections, Mobile networks, Network mode: 5G preferred or 4G preferred.
