Step by step
Open Notifications in Site settings
Tap the three dots, Settings, Site settings, Notifications.

Choose Don't allow
Sites can ask to send notifications is the default. Don't allow sites to send notifications stops new requests. How to show requests below sets how quiet the requests are; ours was Collapse unwanted requests.
Remove one site that already sends them
Sites you allowed are listed further down the same page. Tap the site and set its notifications to Block. Or open Site settings, All sites, tap the site and change Notifications there.

Or switch off Chrome notifications completely
Open the phone's Settings, Apps, Chrome, Notifications. Allow notifications is the main switch; Configure in Chrome at the bottom leads back to Chrome's own settings. On a Galaxy this page also sets the sound and the pop-up style.
About this guide
Spammy "Allow notifications?" sites keep pinging you after one wrong tap. Chrome has a setting for websites and Android has one for the whole app. We only looked at these screens on our phone and changed nothing.
The screenshots are from Chrome and the Gmail app on a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with Android 16 and One UI 8.5, in dark mode. Both apps look the same on other Android phones; only the phone's own settings screens differ by brand.
Good to know
Switching off Chrome as a whole also stops download and media notifications from Chrome.
Pop-ups and ads in the browser are a separate setting: pop-up ads on a Samsung Galaxy: how to stop them.
In short: Chrome, Settings, Site settings, Notifications: Don't allow. Whole app: phone Settings, Apps, Chrome, Notifications.
