How to block a phone number on an iPhone
2 min read · 4 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
Open the Phone app, tap Recents, tap the number or the i button next to it, scroll down and tap Block Caller. The person can no longer call, message or FaceTime you, and they are not told.
Blocking stops a number from reaching you by phone call, text message and FaceTime. Blocked callers go straight to voicemail and you get no notification.
Menu names are from iOS 26. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the screen, not screenshots.
Step by step
Open the Phone app and tap Recents
Find the call from the number you want to block.
Open the details for that call
In the new call list, tap the entry to open its details. In the classic view, tap the small i in a circle next to the number, because tapping the number itself calls it back.
Scroll down and tap Block Caller
On older versions the button is called Block Contact or Block this Caller. Confirm when asked.
Block from a message instead
In Messages, open the conversation, tap the name or number at the top, then tap Block Caller.
Good to know
To see or undo your blocks, open Settings, Apps, Phone, Blocked Contacts. Swipe left on a number and tap Unblock.
To stop calls from numbers that are not in your contacts, open Settings, Apps, Phone, Screen Unknown Callers and choose Silence. On iOS 18 and earlier the switch is called Silence Unknown Callers. The calls go to voicemail and appear in your call list.
Blocking on the iPhone does not block the person in WhatsApp or other apps. Block them there separately.
For threats or harassment, keep the messages as evidence and report them to your mobile network or the police.
In short: Phone, Recents, open the call details, Block Caller.
