By · 2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 5 October 2026 · ▶ Video demo

Short answer

Restart the phone first. If the message comes back, open Settings, Apps, Google, tap Force stop, then Storage, Clear cache. Update the Google app and Android System WebView in the Play Store. Clear data only as a last resort, and install any software update.

Step by step

  1. 1Side key + volume down2Restart

    Restart the phone

Press and hold the side key and volume down, tap Restart, then try again. A restart clears a stuck process and fixes most one-off crashes.

  2. Android screenshot: Open the Google app's App info

Open the Google app's App info

Open Settings, Apps and tap Google in the list. Searching for Google at the top of Apps is quicker.

  3. Android screenshot: Tap Force stop

    Tap Force stop

Force stop is in the bar at the bottom of App info. Confirm, then open the Google app again. We did not tap it on our phone.

  4. Android screenshot: Clear the cache

    Clear the cache

On App info tap Storage, then Clear cache. Our Google app held 104 MB of cache. Clearing it deletes only temporary files; you stay signed in.

  5. 1Play Store2Search: Google3Update4Android System WebView5Update

Update the Google app and WebView

Open the Play Store, search for Google and tap Update if it appears. Do the same for Android System WebView, which many apps use to show web pages.

  6. Android screenshot: Clear data as a last resort

Clear data as a last resort

Clear data on the same Storage page resets the Google app to how it was when first opened, including its settings on this phone. Try it only if the crashes continue after the steps above.

  7. Android screenshot: Install the latest software

    Install the latest software

Settings, Software update, Download and install. Our phone was on One UI 8.5.

About this guide

The message means the Google app (search, Discover and the assistant) crashed. Clearing its cache keeps your settings; clearing its data resets the app on this phone.

The screenshots are from a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with One UI 8.5 and Android 16. Other Galaxy phones on One UI 8 use the same menus; on older One UI versions a few names and positions differ. We only looked at these screens on our phone and changed nothing.

Good to know

If many different apps keep stopping at once, the shared part is usually Android System WebView or a nearly full storage: how to check and free up storage on a Samsung Galaxy phone.

The Google app is preinstalled: its App info offers Disable instead of Uninstall. Disabling it also turns off Google search and Discover, so use the steps above instead.

In short: Restart; Settings, Apps, Google, Force stop; Storage, Clear cache; update Google and WebView; Clear data only last.
