Dark mode turns the white backgrounds of Settings, Samsung apps and most other apps black or dark grey, which is easier on the eyes at night.

The screenshots are from a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with One UI 8.5 and Android 16. Other Galaxy phones on One UI 8 use the same menus; on older One UI versions a few names and positions differ.

Step by step

  1. Android screenshot: Open Display

    Open Display

    Open Settings and tap Display.

  2. Android screenshot: Tap Dark

    Tap Dark

At the top of the page, tap Dark. The screen switches at once. Tap Light to switch back.

  3. Android screenshot: Schedule it

    Schedule it

Tap Dark mode settings to turn dark mode on automatically between sunset and sunrise, or on a custom schedule with your own start and end times.

  4. Use the quick panel

Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open the full quick panel and tap the Dark mode button. Tap it again to turn it off.

Good to know

Some apps from other developers ignore the system setting and have their own theme option in their settings.

Eye comfort shield, a little further down the same Display page, is a separate setting for warmer colours at night.

In short: Settings, Display, Dark. Dark mode settings for a schedule.
