How to turn Always On Display on or off on a Samsung Galaxy phone

Open Settings, Lock screen and AOD, Always On Display and tap the switch. When to show sets whether it appears always, only when you tap the screen, on a schedule, or for new notifications. It is not available while Power saving is on.

Always On Display shows the time, date and notifications on the dark screen while the phone is locked.
The screenshots are from a Samsung Galaxy A57 5G with One UI 8.5 and Android 16. Other Galaxy phones on One UI 8 use the same menus; on older One UI versions a few names and positions differ.
Step by step
Open Always On Display
Open Settings, tap Lock screen and AOD, then Always On Display.

Switch it on or off
Tap the switch at the top. On means the clock shows on the dark screen.

Choose when to show it
Tap When to show. Tap to show displays it briefly when you touch the screen; Always keeps it on while the phone is locked; As scheduled and For new notifications are the other choices.
Check Power saving
If the switch does nothing, Power saving may be on: Always On Display is not available in Power saving.
