How to turn off or restart a Xiaomi phone (HyperOS 3)

Press and hold the Power button until the power menu appears, then choose Power off or Reboot. If holding it opens Gemini instead, go to Settings, System, Gestures, Press and hold power button and choose Power menu. To force a frozen phone to restart, hold the Power button for about 11 seconds.

6 of 6 steps show a real screenshot from our Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G. Each step was checked against the maker's own instructions, linked at the end.

Steps

0 of 6 steps
  1. 1

    Open the power menu

Press and hold the Power button until the menu appears. Slide the middle button up to Power off, or down to Reboot. In mid-October our phone needed the Power and Volume up buttons pressed together for this menu.

    If holding Power opens Gemini

Press and hold power button is then set to Digital assistant. In mid-October a long press on the Power button alone opened Gemini at the bottom of the screen on our phone.

    Search Settings for power button

Open Settings and type power button. Ours listed Press and hold power button with its route, System > Gestures. Tap it, or go to Settings, System, Gestures yourself.

Tap Press and hold power button

The Gestures page lists Navigation mode, One-handed mode and Press and hold power button. Ours said Access power menu under it.

    Choose Power menu

Under Press and hold the power button to access, tap Power menu. Digital assistant is the other choice. Ours had Power menu ticked.

Force a restart if the phone is frozen

In mid-October the Power off page under Gesture shortcuts on our phone said: Press and hold the Power button for 11 seconds to force reboot your device. Xiaomi's HyperOS 3 user guide gives 15 seconds, so keep holding if 11 is not enough.

If you do not see this option

  • No System, Gestures on your phone? In mid-October our Redmi (HyperOS 3.0.308.0) had the Power button settings under Accessibility, General, Gesture shortcuts, and Xiaomi's HyperOS 3 guide puts Gesture shortcuts under Additional settings. On 23 October the same phone had them under System, Gestures, so search Settings for power button. Source: Generic User Guide for HyperOS 3.0
  • Other power button settings? The same search found Double-press power button to open and Press and hold duration, both under System, Gestures, and Power button ends call under Accessibility.

If this does not work

  • Holding Power only opens Gemini? Press and hold power button is set to Digital assistant. Choose Power menu in step 5, or try Power and Volume up together, which opened the menu on our phone in mid-October.
  • Screen frozen and buttons do nothing? Hold the Power button for the force reboot time, 11 seconds on ours in mid-October and 15 in Xiaomi's guide. Nothing is erased.
  • Phone won't switch back on? The battery may be flat. Connect the charger, wait a few minutes, then press and hold the Power button until the screen lights up.
