What was reported

The Financial Times reported on 30-31 October that OpenAI has reduced the target for its current funding round from $30 billion to $20 billion, and the valuation from $1.4 trillion to $1.25 trillion. The Wall Street Journal reported that about $11 billion is committed so far, that some large investors showed "tepid interest", and that OpenAI plans to raise more from family offices and wealthy individuals. The FT said investors from the UAE are leading the round.

Not confirmed: OpenAI has not publicly confirmed the new target or valuation.

The market around it

  • The Nasdaq 100 fell 3.5% on Friday 30 October in a broad sell-off of AI stocks.
  • Alphabet shares dropped 13% after its results on 28 October, wiping roughly $500 billion off its value.
  • Anthropic is reported to be preparing for a stock market listing.

Why it matters

A $20 billion round at a $1.25 trillion valuation would still be among the largest private raises ever. The signal is the direction, not the size: investors are asking harder questions about when the enormous spending on chips and data centres will pay back. When the biggest names have to trim their asks, smaller AI start-ups usually find money harder to raise too.

What it means for you

  • If you use ChatGPT or other AI tools: nothing changes today. Funding news does not switch off products.
  • If you hold tech funds or a pension: many index funds are heavily weighted to a handful of AI-exposed companies. Swings like last Friday's show up there.
  • If you pay for AI subscriptions: pressure to show revenue can mean price changes or new tiers. Check your plan's terms before you renew annually.

What we don't know yet

The final amount raised, who the lead investors are by name, and whether the lower valuation is a one-off or the start of a reset across the sector.
