The goal
Alisson gave the ball away, Declan Rice drove a low cross into the box and Kai Havertz finished in the 16th minute. It was the only goal. Florian Wirtz came closest for Liverpool when his free kick hit the bar.
The numbers behind the result
- Liverpool had 56% possession and 17 shots to Arsenal's 10 (Sky Sports figures).
- Liverpool had no shots on target, according to TNT Sports, so David Raya was never made to make a save.
- Arsenal's last Premier League win at Anfield was in 2012. Mikel Arteta: "Fourteen years without a win here is a long time."
The penalty Liverpool wanted
Jurrien Timber pulled Alexander Isak's shirt as he went to meet a ball in the box. Referee Andy Madley played on and the VAR, Stuart Attwell, did not intervene. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola called it a "clear penalty" and added, pointedly: "Next time managers should tell Alex to go to the floor." Virgil van Dijk also said it was a clear penalty.
The row is about more than one decision. Isak stayed on his feet, and the debate is whether a player who keeps going for the ball is punished for not going down. Even many Arsenal fans agreed it should have been given; see what Arsenal and Liverpool fans said on Reddit.
What it means for the title race
