The Grizzlies Are 6-0 and the Last Unbeaten Team. Is It Real?

Memphis beat Sacramento 136-105 on 31 October to go 6-0, matching the franchise's best start and leaving them as the NBA's only unbeaten team. Last season they won 25 games.

How they got here

The Grizzlies finished 25-57 last season and traded Ja Morant to Portland. Under coach Tuomas Iisalo they are now 6-0, level with the 2014-15 team for the best start in franchise history, and they lead the league in scoring at 121.2 points a game while allowing 106.0.

The rookie

Cameron Boozer, the No. 3 pick from Duke, is 19. He scored a career-high 27 against the Kings and posted 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists at Portland on 29 October, the second-youngest triple-double in NBA history. He is averaging about 17.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.7 assists. His own explanation for the start: "The depth is very important... just win your minutes."

The bench is the story

  • Memphis's bench outscored Sacramento's 81-20.
  • Ty Jerome scored 45 in the opener, a franchise record for an opening night, and was named Western Conference Player of the Week.
  • Cam Spencer had 13 assists without a turnover against the Kings; GG Jackson made all five of his three-point attempts.

Why to be careful

The schedule has been kind: two games against the winless Kings (0-6) and two against the Jazz. Sports Illustrated's verdict is that the depth is real but the test is ahead. The next week is a good guide: New Orleans on Monday 2 November, Indiana on 4 November, then Oklahoma City on 6 November.
