Smoke alarm chirping? What the chirp means and how to stop it

A single chirp every 30 to 40 seconds usually means a low battery: fit a new one and press Test. A sealed 10-year alarm that chirps every 30 seconds, or an alarm that keeps chirping with a new battery, needs replacing (Kidde).

These are Kidde's descriptions. Other brands use different patterns, so check the label or manual of your alarm.

Before you start

  • Rented home in Germany? The owner has to install the smoke alarms. Who maintains them (owner or tenant) depends on the federal state, and many landlords hire a service company (Berliner Mieterverein, ista). Tell your landlord or Hausverwaltung before you swap anything.
  • Use a stable step ladder, not a chair.

Step 1: find the alarm that's chirping

Stand under each alarm for a minute. A carbon monoxide alarm with a low battery chirps too: Kidde CO alarms chirp once every 60 seconds when the batteries need replacing.

Step 2: twist the alarm off its base

Most alarms twist off their base. Check the arrows on the alarm or its manual for the direction.

Step 3: replace the battery (alarms with a battery door)

Use the battery type printed on the alarm. No battery door? It's a sealed alarm: go to "Sealed 10-year alarm" below.

Step 4: put it back and press Test

Twist it back onto its base and press the test button until it sounds (Kidde: replace the battery, then test).

Sealed 10-year alarm

Illustration: the date is on the label on the back

A sealed alarm that chirps every 30 seconds has reached its end of life, and a new battery can't fix it (Kidde). Check the label on the back: NFPA says to replace smoke alarms every 10 years.

Fit the new alarm the same day and press Test.

If this doesn't work

  • Still chirping with a new battery: hold Test for at least 2 seconds. If it still doesn't sound, the alarm has failed: replace it (Kidde).
  • It's the carbon monoxide alarm: Kidde CO alarms start chirping every 30 seconds seven years after they're first powered up, and then no longer detect CO. Replace it.
  • Wireless alarms chirping: Kidde says a nearby similar system can interfere; the manual explains how to change the setting.

If the alarm sounds fully and you can smell or see smoke, get out first and call the emergency number. Don't stop to silence it.

Questions readers ask

How often should I test my smoke alarm?

At least once a month: press the test button (NFPA).

How long does a smoke alarm last?

Replace it every 10 years (NFPA). In Germany, DIN 14676 calls for a yearly check and replacement after 10 years at the latest (ista).

Why does it chirp after I pressed Hush?

On Kidde alarms with a Hush button, the alarm chirps every 30 to 40 seconds for about seven minutes while Hush is on, then stops.

Can I just take the battery out?

Not without a replacement ready the same day. Without it, you have no warning in a fire.
