How to send messages via satellite on an iPhone
2 min read · 6 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
With no mobile signal and no Wi-Fi, go outside with a clear view of the sky, open Messages and tap the prompt to connect to a satellite. Follow the instructions to point the iPhone, then type and send your text. It needs an iPhone 14 or later with iOS 18 and works in the US, Canada, Mexico and Japan.
Messages via satellite lets an iPhone send and receive texts where there is no network at all, for example on a mountain trail. It is slower than a normal message and it is limited to certain countries, so check before a trip whether it works where you are going.
Step by step
Check that your iPhone supports it
You need an iPhone 14 or later with iOS 18 or later (iOS 18.4 in Mexico) and an active SIM. The feature is offered in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan. iPhones bought in Armenia, Belarus, China mainland, Kazakhstan and Russia have no satellite connection.
Turn on iMessage before you leave
iMessage has to be switched on while you still have a normal connection. Open Settings, Apps, Messages and check the iMessage switch.
Go outside
You need a clear view of the sky and the horizon. Trees slow the connection down, and buildings, canyons and thick forest can block it.
Connect to a satellite
When the iPhone has no signal, a prompt appears on the Lock Screen and in Messages. Tap it. You can also open Control Centre, tap the mobile signal button and tap Satellite.
Point the iPhone
The screen shows which way to turn so that the phone points at a satellite. Hold it in your hand. You do not need to raise your arm.
Write and send the message
Type a short text and send it. In good conditions it takes about 30 seconds to go out, and more than a minute under light tree cover.
Good to know
You can send texts, emoji and Tapbacks. Photos, videos, audio messages, stickers and group messages are not possible.
Replies reach you by iMessage from people with iOS 18 or later. By SMS, your emergency contacts and Family Sharing members can always reach you. Others can reply to an SMS you sent them.
Apple includes the service free for two years after the activation of an iPhone 14 or later. Your network may charge for SMS.
In an emergency, use Emergency SOS via satellite, which is available in more countries: how to set up Emergency SOS on an iPhone.
In short: iPhone 14 or later, iOS 18, iMessage on, clear sky, tap the satellite prompt, point, send a short text.
