How to save where you parked in Google Maps
2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 3 October 2026
When you have parked, open Google Maps, tap the blue dot that shows your position and tap Save your parking. To get back, tap the search bar, tap Parking location and then Directions. Under More info you can add a note, such as the level and bay number, a photo, and the time left on the ticket.
A large car park, an unfamiliar town, a street you will not remember in three hours: Google Maps can mark the spot in two taps and walk you back to it later. It works on any Android phone and on iPhones with the Google Maps app.
Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones and Google's own apps on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them.
Step by step
Save the spot
Before you walk away, open Google Maps. Tap the blue dot that marks where you are and tap Save your parking. A P marker appears on the map.
Check that the dot is right
In multi-storey and underground car parks the position is often inaccurate. If the marker is off, tap the search bar, tap Parking location, tap it again at the bottom and choose Change location, then move the map.
Add a note and a photo
Tap the search bar, then Parking location and More info. Write the level, row and bay number, and take a photo of the nearest sign or pillar. Indoors, this note is what actually gets you back to the car.
Set the time left
In the same place, enter the time remaining on the parking ticket. Maps reminds you before it runs out.
Find the car
Tap the search bar, tap Parking location and tap Directions at the bottom. Switch to walking if Maps suggests driving.
Share it
Under More info, tap the Share icon to send the spot to the person who is meeting you at the car.
Clear it
When you drive off, open the parking location card and tap Clear, so the old spot does not confuse you next time.
Good to know
Location must be switched on, and Maps needs permission to use it. If the blue dot is grey or missing, see Android GPS not accurate: 8 ways to fix your location.
With Android Auto or Bluetooth in the car, Maps can note the place by itself when the phone disconnects from the car. Do not rely on it in a car park.
The search for free parking near a destination is only offered in some cities in the United States.
