Apple Watch heart rate not accurate? 7 things to check

2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Wear the watch snugly on top of the wrist, so the sensor on the back stays against the skin, and tighten the band for workouts. Then check in the Apple Watch app that Wrist Detection is on under Passcode and that Heart Rate is on under Privacy.

The watch measures the pulse with light through the skin. Anything that lets the sensor lift off the skin, or reduces blood flow in the wrist, gives gaps or odd readings. Most fixes are about how the watch sits.

These steps are for recent versions of watchOS. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the watch screen, not screenshots.

Step by step

  1. Check the fit

The watch belongs on top of the wrist, not too tight and not too loose, with room for the skin to breathe. If it slides around, the sensor loses contact. Tighten the band for a workout and loosen it afterwards.

  2. PasscodeChange PasscodeUnlock with iPhoneWrist Detection

    Turn on Wrist Detection

On the iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, tap Passcode and switch on Wrist Detection. Without it there are no heart rate readings in the background and no Stand reminders.

  3. Check that Heart Rate is allowed

In the Apple Watch app, tap Privacy and make sure Heart Rate is switched on.

  4. Clean the back of the watch

Sweat, sunscreen and dust on the sensor glass get in the way. Wipe the back with a soft, lint-free cloth, slightly damp if needed, and dry it.

  5. Keep your personal details up to date

In the Apple Watch app, tap Health, Health Details, Edit and check birth date, sex, height and weight. The watch uses them to work out calories and other values.

  6. Choose the right workout

In the Workout app, pick the activity that matches what you do, for example Indoor Run or Outdoor Walk. If yours is not listed, tap Add Workout. See how to start a workout on an Apple Watch.

  7. Know the limits

Cold reduces blood flow in the skin, and readings can fail in cold surroundings. The ink of some tattoos blocks the sensor's light. Irregular movements, as in tennis or boxing, are harder to measure than steady ones such as running.

Good to know

If the wrist does not give good readings, the watch can use a Bluetooth chest strap instead. Pair it on the watch under Settings, Bluetooth.

The watch is not a medical device for diagnosis. If you have symptoms, do not rely on a reading. Talk to a doctor.
