Short answer

Click Control Centre in the menu bar and click Edit Controls. Drag controls from the gallery into Control Centre, drag unwanted ones out, and drag to rearrange. Click Done.

Control Centre is the panel behind the icon with two small switches near the top right of the screen. It gathers quick controls for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sound, brightness, Focus and more. On macOS Tahoe you choose what it contains.

Step by step

  1. Open Control Centre

Click the Control Centre icon in the menu bar at the top right of the screen.

  2. Click Edit Controls

A gallery of available controls opens.

  3. Add a control

Drag an item from the gallery to the place you want in Control Centre. The categories in the sidebar of the gallery narrow the choice.

  4. Remove a control

Drag the item out of Control Centre.

  5. Rearrange and resize

Drag items to a different position. To change the size of an item, Control-click it and choose a different size.

  6. Click Done

    The new layout is saved.

Good to know

To keep a control visible all the time, Control-click it and choose Add to Menu Bar or Copy to Menu Bar.

Controls for things you do every day are worth adding. Apple's examples include Quick Note and Put Display to Sleep.

The icons next to Control Centre are managed separately: how to customise the menu bar on a Mac.

In short: Control Centre, Edit Controls, drag items in, out or around, Done.
