How to use a Windows 11 PC as a Wi-Fi hotspot
2 min read · 6 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
Open Settings, Network & internet, Mobile hotspot. Choose the connection to share, check the network name and password under Properties, and switch on Mobile hotspot at the top. Other devices then join it like any Wi-Fi network.
A PC with an internet connection can pass it on to a phone, tablet or another computer. This helps in a hotel with one cable connection, or when a network only allows one device.
These steps are for Windows 11. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the Settings window, not screenshots, so colours and spacing on your PC look a little different.
Step by step
Open Settings, Network & internet
Press Windows + I and click Network & internet on the left.
Click Mobile hotspot
The page shows the hotspot switch and its options.
Choose what to share and how
Under "Share my internet connection from", pick the connection the PC uses, such as Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Under "Share over", leave Wi-Fi, which is usually faster than Bluetooth.
Check the name and password
Open Properties and click Edit to change the network name, the password and the band. Click Save.
Switch on Mobile hotspot
Use the switch at the top of the page.
Connect the other device
On the phone or tablet, open the Wi-Fi list, choose the name from the previous step and type the password.
Good to know
The hotspot also has a button in quick settings: click the network, sound and battery icons at the right of the taskbar. You may have to look on the second page.
Everything the connected devices do uses the PC's connection. On a metered or mobile data connection this can become expensive.
Switch the hotspot off when you finish. It uses power and leaves a network open around you.
In short: Settings, Network & internet, Mobile hotspot, choose the connection, switch on.
