AirTag Found Moving With You: what the alert means and what to do
2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
The alert means an AirTag or similar tracker that is separated from its owner has been travelling with you. Tap the alert, tap Continue and Play Sound to find it. Hold the iPhone to the tracker to see its serial number, then tap Instructions to Disable. If you feel unsafe, go to a public place and contact the police.
Trackers are made for keys and bags, and they can be misused to follow a person. Apple devices warn you when a tracker that does not belong to you moves with you over time. Often the explanation is harmless: borrowed keys, a bag from a family member, a tracker in a rental car. The steps are the same either way.
Menu names are from recent versions of iOS.
Step by step
Read the alert
AirTag Found Moving With You means an AirTag. AirPods Detected means a set of AirPods. A product name followed by Found Moving With You means a tracker from another maker that uses the Find My network. Unknown Accessory Detected means a device that could not be identified fully.
Think of the harmless reasons
Are you carrying something borrowed? Is a family member's tracker in the car or bag? If the item belongs to someone in your Family Sharing group, you can pause the alerts for it.
Play a sound
Tap the alert, tap Continue and tap Play Sound. Listen, and repeat if needed. Check bags, coat pockets, the car and under the seats.
Use Find Nearby
If your iPhone supports it, tap Find Nearby and follow the directions and the distance on the screen until you reach the tracker.
Get information about it
Hold the top of the iPhone near the white side of the AirTag until a notification appears. Tap it to see the serial number and the last four digits of the owner's phone number. Take a screenshot. If the owner marked it as lost, a contact message is shown.
Disable it
Tap Instructions to Disable and follow them. For an AirTag this means removing the battery, which stops it from sharing its location.
If you feel unsafe
Go to a safe public place before you do anything else, and contact the police. They can ask Apple for information about the owner with the serial number. Keep the tracker and your screenshots as evidence.
Good to know
To receive these alerts, the iPhone needs a recent iOS, Bluetooth on, Location Services on with Significant Locations enabled under System Services, and Tracking Notifications allowed under Settings, Notifications. Airplane Mode must be off.
To check by hand, open the Find My app, tap Items, scroll to the bottom and tap Identify Found Item.
Android phones with Android 6 or later warn about unknown trackers automatically and can run a manual scan in the settings.

In short: Tap the alert, Continue, Play Sound or Find Nearby, hold the iPhone to the tracker for its details, Instructions to Disable. Unsafe: public place and police.
