iPhone not showing up in Finder on a Mac? 7 fixes to try
2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
Unlock the iPhone and connect it with a USB cable that carries data. Click Allow on the Mac if it asks whether the accessory may connect, and tap Trust on the iPhone. The iPhone then appears in the Finder sidebar under Locations. If it does not, try another cable and another port.
On a current Mac the iPhone is managed in Finder, not in iTunes. For it to appear, three things have to agree: the cable carries data, the Mac allows the accessory, and the iPhone trusts the Mac.
Menu names are from recent versions of macOS, where the settings app is called System Settings.
Step by step
Unlock the iPhone and plug it in
The iPhone must be unlocked and on the Home Screen when you connect it.
Click Allow on the Mac
Mac laptops ask Allow accessory to connect? for new USB devices. Click Allow. If you clicked Don't Allow earlier, unplug the cable and plug it in again.
Tap Trust on the iPhone
When Trust This Computer? appears, tap Trust and enter the passcode.
Show the sidebar in Finder
Open a Finder window. If there is no sidebar, choose View, Show Sidebar. The iPhone is listed under Locations. If Locations is hidden, choose Finder, Settings, Sidebar and tick CDs, DVDs and iOS Devices.
Check the cable and the ports
Look into the port of the iPhone for dust and fluff. Use a different cable: some cheap cables only charge. Try another port on the Mac and leave out hubs.
Update both devices
Install the latest macOS (how to update macOS on your Mac) and the latest iOS. An iPhone with a much newer system may need a newer macOS to be recognised.
Restart and look for interfering software
Restart the Mac and the iPhone. Security software from other makers can block the connection, so switch it off for a test.
Good to know
If the Trust question never appears, reset it on the iPhone: Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, Reset Location & Privacy. The iPhone then asks again the next time you connect it.
On a Windows PC the iPhone appears in the Apple Devices app, which you install from the Microsoft Store.
What to do once it shows up: how to back up an iPhone to a Mac or PC and how to transfer photos from an iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC.
In short: Unlock, connect, Allow on the Mac, Trust on the iPhone, show the Finder sidebar, other cable and port, update, restart.
