How to make and answer phone calls on a Mac

2 min read · 6 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

On the iPhone, open Settings, Apps, Phone, Calls on Other Devices, turn on Allow Calls on Other Devices and switch on your Mac. On the Mac, open FaceTime, choose FaceTime, Settings and tick Calls from iPhone. Both must use the same Apple Account and the same Wi-Fi network.

With this set up, a call to your iPhone also rings on the Mac, and you can dial any number from the Mac. The call still goes through the iPhone and your mobile plan. The Mac acts as a speakerphone.

Menu names are from recent versions of macOS, where the settings app is called System Settings.

Step by step

  1. Check the basics

The iPhone and the Mac must be signed in to the same Apple Account, have Wi-Fi switched on and be connected to the same network.

  2. Allow calls on the iPhone

Open Settings, Apps, Phone and tap Calls on Other Devices. Switch on Allow Calls on Other Devices, then switch on your Mac in the list below.

  3. Check FaceTime on the iPhone

Under Settings, Apps, FaceTime, FaceTime must be on and your phone number ticked under You can be reached by FaceTime at.

  4. Allow calls on the Mac

Open the FaceTime app. Choose FaceTime, Settings from the menu bar, check that the right Apple Account is signed in, and tick Calls from iPhone.

  5. Make a call

On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, open the Phone app and dial or pick a contact. On any version you can use FaceTime, or click a phone number in Contacts, Calendar, Messages or Safari and choose to call with the iPhone.

  6. Answer a call

A notification appears at the top right of the Mac screen. Click Accept, or Decline to send the caller to voicemail.
