How to use the torch on an Apple Watch

2 min read · 5 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Press the side button to open Control Centre and tap the torch icon. The screen turns bright white. Swipe left for a flashing white light and a red light. Press the Digital Crown or side button to turn it off.

The watch screen can act as a small torch, which is enough to find a keyhole or walk through a dark room. The red mode protects your night vision.

These steps are for recent versions of watchOS. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the watch screen, not screenshots.

Step by step

  1. Press the side button

    Control Centre opens.

  2. Control CentreSilent ModeTheatre ModeWater LockTorch

    Tap the torch icon

The screen dims at first and brightens when you turn your wrist away from you.

  3. Swipe left for other modes

Steady white, flashing white for being seen while walking or running, and red.

  4. Adjust the brightness

    Turn the Digital Crown.

  5. Turn it off

Press the Digital Crown or the side button, or swipe down from the top of the watch face.

Good to know

The torch uses the display at full brightness and drains the battery quickly. Do not leave it on.

On watchOS 9 and earlier, open Control Centre by swiping up from the bottom of the watch face.

In short: Side button, torch icon. Swipe for flashing or red.
