How to charge an Apple Watch correctly

Place the back of the watch on its magnetic charger until it clicks into place and a green lightning bolt appears. Use the cable that came with the watch and a USB power adapter. A full charge takes about one to one and a half hours on recent models.
Apple Watch charges only with a magnetic watch charger. It does not charge on phone wireless pads. Getting the placement and the adapter right avoids slow or failed charging.
Step by step
Plug the charger into a power adapter
Use a USB-C power adapter in a wall socket. A computer's USB port charges more slowly.
Remove any plastic film
A new charger and a new watch each have a protective film. Peel both off.
Place the watch on the charger
The curved back sits on the puck. Magnets pull it into position.
Check for the green bolt
A green lightning bolt means charging. A red bolt means the battery is low and it has just started. The watch chimes unless it is in Silent mode.
Use fast charging if you have it
Series 7 and later, and Ultra, charge fast with the USB-C magnetic fast charger and an adapter of 18 watts or more. Roughly 45 minutes gives about 80% on those models.
Good to know
Optimised Battery Charging may hold the charge at 80% and finish shortly before you usually take the watch off the charger. Tap the charging circle on the watch and choose Charge to Full Now when you need it.
A slightly warm watch while charging is normal. If it gets hot, take it off the charger and remove any case.
Clean the back of the watch and the charger with a dry cloth if charging is unreliable.

In short: Charger into a wall adapter, watch on the puck, look for the green bolt.
