What an Apple Watch can do without the iPhone nearby

2 min read · 6 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Without the iPhone and without any network, an Apple Watch still tracks workouts, counts activity, shows the time, alarms and timers, pays with Apple Pay, measures heart rate and plays music you have downloaded. For calls, messages and Siri it needs Wi-Fi or its own mobile plan.

Many people leave the phone at home for a run and wonder what still works. The answer depends on how the watch is connected: not at all, by Wi-Fi, or by its own mobile connection.

Step by step

  1. With no connection at all

The watch tracks workouts and your Activity rings, shows the time and runs alarms, timers and the stopwatch. It measures heart rate, blood oxygen and ECG, tracks sleep, and pays with Apple Pay. It plays music, podcasts and audiobooks that were downloaded to the watch, and shows synced photos, your calendar and contacts.

  2. With Wi-Fi or mobile service

The watch can make and answer phone calls, send and receive messages, use Siri, show the weather, give directions in Maps, stream music and podcasts, control smart home devices and find people, devices and items.

  3. Calls over Wi-Fi

Phone calls on Wi-Fi without the iPhone nearby need Wi-Fi Calling to be switched on with your network. See how to turn on Wi-Fi Calling on an iPhone.

  4. Messages

iMessage works on the watch if the iPhone is signed in to iMessage. For normal text messages (SMS) on a watch with mobile service, the iPhone must be switched on and connected somewhere, but it does not have to be near you.

  5. Download music before you leave

Add playlists to the watch in the Watch app on the iPhone, under My Watch, Music. They sync while the watch is on its charger.

  6. Check the connection on the watch

Press the side button to open Control Centre. A green phone symbol means the iPhone is connected, a Wi-Fi symbol means Wi-Fi, and green bars mean the watch's own mobile connection.

Good to know

Low Power Mode switches some of these features off or delays them, for example background heart rate measurements and incoming notifications when the iPhone is not near.

Emergency SOS needs a connection: mobile service on the watch, or Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi Calling. See how to use Emergency SOS on an Apple Watch.

To give the watch its own connection: how to set up mobile service on an Apple Watch.

In short: No network: workouts, rings, time, Apple Pay, heart rate, downloaded music. Wi-Fi or mobile: calls, messages, Siri, streaming, Maps.
