Second monitor not detected on Windows 11? 8 fixes to try

Press Windows + P and choose Extend. If the monitor stays dark, unplug docks and adapters and connect it directly with a cable you know is good. Then press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver, and restart the PC.
An external monitor that Windows does not see is a cable or adapter problem in most cases, and a driver problem in most of the rest. Microsoft's checklist starts with the hardware.
These steps are for Windows 11. The pictures are diagrams of the keys to press.
Step by step
Choose Extend
Press Windows + P. In the list at the side of the screen, choose Extend, or Duplicate to show the same picture on both.
Remove docks and adapters
Unplug docking stations, dongles and adapters and connect the monitor directly to the PC. If it works then, the dock or adapter is the cause.
Check and swap the cable
Push the cable in firmly at both ends. Try a different cable. Check on the monitor itself that the right input is selected, for example HDMI 1 or DisplayPort.
Try another port
If the PC has more than one video output (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C), try another one. On a desktop PC with a graphics card, use the ports on the card and not the ones on the mainboard.
Test the monitor on another device
Connect the monitor to a different computer. If it stays dark there too, the monitor or its cable is faulty.
Restart the graphics driver
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. The screen flickers or goes black for a second, and Windows reloads the driver.
Restart the PC
Choose Start, Power, Restart, with the monitor connected and switched on.
Roll back or reinstall the display driver
Search the taskbar for Device Manager and open it. Expand Display adapters, right-click the adapter and choose Properties. On the Driver tab, click Roll Back Driver if it is available. Otherwise choose Uninstall device, tick Attempt to remove the driver for this device, restart, then right-click the adapter and choose Update driver, Search automatically for drivers.
Good to know
For two or more external monitors: get one working first. Not every graphics card supports several screens, and a simple splitter only shows the same picture twice. A docking station or a USB-C adapter with its own video ports adds real outputs.
A USB-C port only carries a picture if it supports DisplayPort or Thunderbolt. Look for the symbols next to the port or in the manual.
When the monitor is found, arrange it under Settings, System, Display.
In short: Windows + P and Extend, no docks, cable, other port, other device, Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, restart, roll back or reinstall the driver.
