How to use Theatre Mode on an Apple Watch

Short answer

Press the side button to open Control Centre and tap the Theatre Mode button, which shows two masks. The screen stays dark when you raise your wrist and the watch is silent. Tap the screen to see the time.

In a cinema, a theatre or a dark bedroom, a watch screen that lights up with every movement disturbs everyone. Theatre Mode keeps the display off and also switches on Silent Mode. You still feel notifications as taps on the wrist. In American English the name is Theater Mode.

Step by step

  1. Press the side button

    Control Centre opens.

  2. Tap the Theatre Mode button

It shows two masks. You may need to scroll down in Control Centre to find it.

  3. Check the top of the watch face

A small masks icon shows that the mode is on.

  4. Look at the time when you need it

Tap the display, press the side button, or turn or press the Digital Crown. The screen lights up briefly.

  5. Switch it off afterwards

Open Control Centre again and tap the same button.

Good to know

Silent Mode alone mutes sounds, but the screen still lights up when you raise your wrist.

Do Not Disturb goes further and holds back both sounds and taps. It is also in Control Centre, with choices such as On for 1 hour.

The Always On display is not available while Theatre Mode is on.
