How to translate a web page in Chrome on Android
2 min read · 8 steps · Updated 3 October 2026
Open the page in Chrome. A bar appears offering to translate it: tap your language and the page is translated. If no bar appears, tap the three dots at the top right and tap Translate. To have a language translated every time, tap the gear icon in the bar and choose Always translate pages in that language.
Chrome has Google Translate built in, so a page in a language you do not read becomes readable with one tap. It is good enough to follow news, forms and instructions, and it is especially useful when you live abroad and official websites exist only in the local language.
Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones and Google's own apps on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them.
Step by step
Open the page
Open Chrome and go to the page. When Chrome notices a language that is not one of yours, it shows a translate bar with the two languages.
Tap your language
Tap the language you want in the bar. The page reloads translated. Tap the original language in the bar to switch back.
If the bar does not appear
Tap the three dots (More) at the top right and tap Translate.
Translate into another language
Tap the gear icon in the translate bar, tap More languages and pick the language you want the page in.
Always translate a language
Tap the gear icon and choose Always translate pages in this language. From then on, pages in that language are translated without asking.
Translate only a passage
Touch and hold a word, drag the handles over the text you want, and tap Translate in the menu that appears. If it is not shown, tap the three dots in that menu first.
Stop offers for a language you read
Tap the three dots, Settings, Languages. Under Advanced, tap Do not offer to translate these languages and add the language.
Turn translation offers on or off
In the same Languages settings, switch Offer to send pages in other languages to Google Translate on or off.
Good to know
Machine translation makes mistakes with legal and medical wording, names and numbers. For anything you sign or pay for, have a person check the important parts.
Text inside pictures is not translated by the bar. For that, use Lens: how to use Google Lens on Android and how to copy text from a photo on Android.
To change the language of Chrome's own menus, open Settings, Languages and tap the language under Chrome's language. For single apps: how to change the language of one app on Android.
Forms that you must print and fill in: translate the page to understand it, but fill in the original version.
In short: Tap your language in the translate bar, or three dots, Translate. Gear icon for other languages and Always translate. Settings, Languages for the rest.
