How to take a hearing test with AirPods Pro

2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 3 October 2026

Short answer

With AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3 in your ears, open Settings on the iPhone, tap your AirPods, then Hearing Health and Take a Hearing Test. Sit in a quiet room and tap the screen each time you hear a tone. The test takes about five minutes and shows your result for each ear.

The hearing test plays quiet tones at different pitches and measures the softest ones you can hear. The result is saved in the Health app as an audiogram that you can show a doctor. Apple intends the feature for adults from 18, and it is not offered in every country.

Menu names are from recent versions of iOS.

Step by step

  1. Check what you need

AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3 with current firmware, and an iPhone or iPad with the latest system. The feature must be available in your country or region.

  2. Prepare

Charge the AirPods. Clean the tips, so wax does not block the sound. Wait a day if you have a cold or an allergy, or if you were somewhere loud, such as a concert, in the last 24 hours.

  3. Find a quiet room

Switch off the television, fans and music. The test pauses when the background noise is too high.

  4. Start the test

Put both AirPods in. Open Settings, tap the name of your AirPods, tap Hearing Health and then Take a Hearing Test. You can also start it from the Health app.

  5. Check the fit

The iPhone first checks the noise in the room and how well the ear tips seal. If it reports a poor fit, try another size of ear tip.

  6. Tap when you hear a tone

Tones are played to one ear and then the other. Tap the screen once each time you hear one, even when it is very faint. Do not tap by guesswork.

  7. Read the result

The result is given in decibels of hearing level (dBHL) for each ear: up to 25 means little or no hearing loss, 26 to 40 mild, 41 to 60 moderate and 61 to 80 severe. It is saved in the Health app, where you can export the audiogram as a PDF.

Good to know

With mild to moderate hearing loss, the AirPods can be set up as a hearing aid, or can adjust music and calls to your hearing (Media Assist). The iPhone offers this after the test where the feature is approved.

With a severe result, a big difference between the ears, or hearing that got worse suddenly, see a doctor. Sudden hearing loss is treated as urgent.

The test does not replace an examination by an ear, nose and throat doctor or an audiologist.

In short: AirPods Pro 2 or 3, quiet room, Settings, your AirPods, Hearing Health, Take a Hearing Test, tap for each tone, result in dBHL saved in Health.
