How to change your Google Account password on Android

2 min read · 5 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Open Settings, tap Google, tap your name and tap Manage your Google Account. Tap Security & sign-in, then Password under How you sign in to Google. Sign in if asked, enter the new password and tap Change Password.

One password protects Gmail, Google Photos, Drive, the Play Store and the backup of your phone. Change it when you suspect that someone else knows it, or when you have used the same password on another website.

Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the screen, not screenshots.

Step by step

  1. Open your Google Account

Open Settings, tap Google, tap your name and tap Manage your Google Account. You can also open myaccount.google.com in a browser.

  2. Google AccountHomePersonal infoData & privacySecurity & sign-in

    Tap Security & sign-in

It is one of the tabs at the top. Swipe sideways if you do not see it.

  3. Tap Password

It is under the heading How you sign in to Google. You may be asked for your current password or your screen lock.

  4. Enter the new password

Type it twice and tap Change Password. Choose one that you have not used with this account before and do not use anywhere else.

  5. Sign in again where needed

Google signs you out everywhere, except on the devices you use to confirm that it is you, in apps from other companies that you gave access to your account, and on home devices linked to the account.

Good to know

If you have forgotten the password, go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery and answer the questions. Google then sends an email with the next step. Look in the spam folder if it does not arrive.

A password alone is weak protection. Add a second step: how to turn on 2-Step Verification for a Google Account.

How to build a good one: how to make strong passwords you can actually remember.

In short: Settings, Google, your name, Manage your Google Account, Security & sign-in, Password, new password, Change Password.
